Gum and Bone Grafting

When gum disease is severe and cannot be treated by non-surgical procedures, your dentist will probably advise you to undergo gum and bone grafting. It is a regenerative dental procedure that can be performed if the gums and bone supporting your teeth have already been destroyed. Gum and bone grafting is a minor surgical procedure that we offer here in our office in Turlock, CA.

Gum grafting is performed to treat and prevent gum disease. It also restores gum tissues to a healthy condition for it to adequately protect your teeth. Bone grafting, on the other hand, restores your jaw and bones to their original condition. Losing teeth and bone can cause your face to sag, causing you to look older. It can also complement certain treatments to restore the function of your teeth. The good thing is that because of modern technology, gums and bones can be build up again using materials from your own body or from other natural and/or synthetic material.

The Procedure

The entire procedure will require several visits to our office, with several weeks interval from each.

  • During your first visit, your dentist will begin by administering local anesthesia to the area where the problem is located. When your gums are totally numb, they will cut open your gum to gain access to your tooth root and the surrounding bone. After cleaning the roots, the dentist will work on repairing the bone by attaching a grafting material. They will then cover the area and stitch back your gums. Over the next few months, the bone graft material attached to your bone will be encouraged to grow, filling in the lost bone and soft tissues.
  • Your dentist will schedule you for a check up within sevevn to ten days after the procedure to check your recovery. You will also have follow-up checkups in the next few months.
  • After a successful gum and bone graft, your dentist will discuss your options to effectively restore the health and condition of your gums and teeth.
