Also known as deep dental cleaning, scaling and root planing are performed to eliminate dental plaque, tartar and calcified substances that can contribute to gum infections. It’s the most efficient way to prevent gum disease from advancing to a more severe condition.
Dental scaling is the most common non-surgical way to treat minor to moderate gum disease. It is very similar to a routine dental cleaning except that scaling involves cleaning the areas above and below your gum lines. It can be done through the use of either a hand-held instrument or an ultrasonic instrument. Root planing, on the other hand, involves thorough scaling of the root surface to decrease the inflammation of gum tissues.
Scaling and root planing will normally require at least two visits to our office in Turlock, CA. Although the process is considered to be a minor dental procedure, it is a detailed process.
After the entire procedure, it is normal to feel discomfort and even a little pain. Your teeth will also be sensitive, and your gums will be swollen for up to a week after the procedure. Your dentist might prescribe a mouth rinse to avoid infection and provide pain relief if needed.
