Dental bridges are a type of dental restoration used to close the gap between missing teeth. Bridges connect two or more dental crowns or false teeth, and they are supported by natural teeth.
This dental appliance prevents your remaining healthy teeth from drifting so you can maintain the shape of your face. But apart from that, keep in mind that missing teeth can cause difficulty when you speak or chew which is why we usually recommend dental bridges to our patients here at Forever Smiles Turlock if they have missing teeth due to decay or accident.
The procedure will require at least two visits to our office here in Turlock, CA. Each visit usually lasts for an hour or two.
- During your first visit, your dentist will prepare the abutment teeth. Preparation involves reshaping these teeth by removing a portion of the enamel to make room for a crown to be placed on them.
- After this, your dentist will make impressions of your mouth using dental putty. These impressions will be sent to our dental laboratory where your actual dental bridge will be made. The dentist will provide you with a temporary bridge to protect your teeth while waiting for your permanent bridge. Usually, it would take a week to finish manufacturing the bridge.
- On your next visit, your dentist will remove the temporary bridge, ensuring that the site is thoroughly clean before they attach the permanent bridge. Before it is cemented, the dentist will check your bite several times to find out if any adjustments will be needed before it is permanently attached. After he is certain that the bridge perfectly fits, they will attach it to the abutment teeth using dental cement.
Your dentist will probably schedule you for check-ups so they can check the fit and function of your dental bridge. It is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene to protect the remaining natural teeth from tooth decay. The success of a dental bridge primarily depends on the foundation offered by the surrounding teeth. With good oral hygiene, dental bridges can last a long time.
